Premier League votes for major change to offside rules with ‘new system’ to be used
The Premier League has announced significant alterations to the offside regulations, implementing a new system called Semi-Automated Offside Technology starting from next season.
This decision was reached unanimously during a recent Premier League Shareholders’ meeting. The introduction of this technology marks a notable shift in officiating practices and is set to debut following one of the Autumn international breaks next season.
Since the implementation of video assistant referees (VAR) in the Premier League in 2019, there has been mounting frustration surrounding the technology’s handling of offside rulings. Utilizing still frames of video footage, VAR officials have often drawn lines to determine offside calls, but the limited capabilities of this method have led to inaccuracies in decision-making.
In response to these concerns, the Premier League has introduced Semi-Automated Offside Technology, aimed at improving the speed and consistency of establishing virtual offside lines.
This new system relies on optical player tracking to swiftly and consistently position the virtual offside line, enhancing both the in-stadium and broadcast experience for fans.
By leveraging high-quality broadcast graphics, the Semi-Automated system aims to reduce the potential for human error in drawing offside lines, thereby offering clearer and more definitive decisions for supporters both in the stadium and watching from home.
