Liverpool settle on new top target to replace Jurgen Klopp as club draw up official three-man shortlist

Liverpool appears to have identified their successor to Jurgen Klopp, after facing setbacks in their attempts to secure Xabi Alonso and Ruben Amorim.

According to a recent report by The Times’ Paul Joyce, Liverpool is nearing an agreement with Arne Slot to take over as manager next season, with the Feyenoord manager emerging as the top contender.

Slot, aged 45, guided Feyenoord to victory in the KNVB Cup final last weekend and has garnered a strong reputation in the Netherlands.

Arne Slot played a pivotal role in Feyenoord’s achievements, notably securing their first Eredivisie title in six years during the 2022-23 season. While he emerges as a leading candidate for the Liverpool managerial position, his appointment is not yet assured.

Liverpool is considering other contenders for the role amidst managerial vacancies at top European clubs such as Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and AC Milan. Despite recent speculation, Ruben Amorim remains on Liverpool’s reported shortlist, alongside Slot and Roberto De Zerbi from Sporting and Brighton, respectively.

Feyenoord is eager to retain Arne Slot as their coach, with technical director Dennis te Kloese expressing confidence in Slot’s continued tenure. However, despite his contract running until 2026, Slot appears inclined to pursue career advancement opportunities. While there is no release clause in his contract, a fee below €10 million (£8.6 million) could potentially secure his services. The cancellation of Slot’s press conference ahead of Feyenoord’s Eredivisie match against Go Ahead Eagles adds to the speculation surrounding his future.

Feyenoord has neither confirmed nor denied reports of Liverpool’s interest in Slot, who is known for adopting a style of play influenced by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola. Additionally, Slot has a relationship with Liverpool’s assistant manager, Pepijn Lijnders.

The lack of official comment from Feyenoord leaves room for speculation regarding Slot’s potential move to Liverpool or other clubs seeking a new manager.
