Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has named Casemiro as the new captain for the 2024/25 pre-season. The Brazilian midfielder will lead a young squad in their match against Rosenborg in Trondheim, taking the armband over senior players like Marcus Rashford and Jonny Evans. Casemiro, who previously captained the team against Crystal Palace, has been chosen for his leadership qualities.

The squad for the match against Rosenborg includes a mix of youth and experience, with Mason Mount starting after a challenging first season limited by injuries. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the only other senior player featured, as many first-team players are either recovering from international duties or working on fitness programs back in Manchester. Notable absentees include Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot, and new signing Joshua Zirkzee, who participated in Euro 2024, as well as Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho, who played in the Copa America.

The match against Rosenborg highlighted several young talents, including Ethan Williams and Ethan Wheatley, who became Manchester United’s 250th Academy graduate to play for the first team. Other young players like Hannibal Mejbri, Will Fish, and Sam Murray also featured, with Jack Fletcher, son of first-team coach Darren Fletcher, named on the bench.

Following the game in Norway, United will head to Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium to face Rangers, continuing their pre-season preparations.
