Manchester United might face a familiar challenge as the new Premier League season begins, potentially relying on an inexperienced young striker once again. Last season, Rasmus Højlund carried much of the burden, as Erik ten Hag had limited options due to a lack of support from the Glazers during the summer and January transfer windows. Despite Joshua Zirkzee being signed early in the transfer window, ten Hag was forced to continue relying on Højlund, especially with Anthony Martial’s ongoing injury issues and Marcus Rashford’s inconsistent form.

INEOS identified the team’s weak attacking line and brought in former Bologna star Joshua Zirkzee. However, with Højlund now expected to miss six weeks, Manchester United is again facing a similar dilemma.

**Striker Shortage**

Ten Hag has mentioned that Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho could play in a false nine role, but Marcus Rashford prefers to operate from the left wing, making the situation less than ideal. Manchester United has been exploring the possibility of bringing in another striker, with names like Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin being considered.

Reports indicate that Brentford’s Toney could become an option if the club lowers their asking price to under £40 million. Currently, Brentford demands £50 million, a sum unlikely to be met given that Toney’s contract expires in 2025. Despite interest from several clubs, **Football Insider** reports that United is contemplating a last-minute move for Toney if certain conditions are met.

**Late Move for Toney**

Ivan Toney, a proven Premier League striker with strong hold-up play, could provide United with something their current forwards lack. According to **Football Insider**, Manchester United is preparing a late bid for Toney as they seek an experienced center-forward. However, for United to afford Toney and his significant wage demands, they would need to make substantial sales, which seems improbable at this stage.

Ultimately, United’s decision may hinge on how they start the season. A poor performance could prompt INEOS to take action and address the striker shortage more aggressively.
