The reigning Premier League champions (City) take on the reigning FA Cup holders (United) in an enticing Manchester derby, as Erik ten Hag’s United stunned Pep Guardiola’s City to clinch the FA Cup final at Wembley in May.

This marquee event provides an early look at City and United near full strength, following their preseason tours in the USA, where many international stars were absent due to post-Copa America and Euros recovery.

Manchester City focus, team news

City have had Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland with them throughout the U.S. preseason, which is a positive for Guardiola, with Haaland scoring a hat trick against Chelsea last time out, shaking off fitness concerns. Goalkeeper Ederson has also been present despite uncertainty about his future, while Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, Bernardo Silva, Kevin de Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, Rodri, John Stones, and Kyle Walker have yet to play in preseason. Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, Kalvin Phillips, Oscar Bobb, James McAtee, and Rico Lewis have been prominent in preseason and are likely to form the core of City’s starting lineup this Saturday as KDB and Rodri are gradually reintroduced to first-team action. Julian Alvarez’s imminent move to Atletico Madrid means he will not feature.

Manchester United focus, team news

United have been gradually reintegrating more starters into preseason, with Antony, Christian Eriksen, and Scott McTominay featuring in the U.S., and Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Alejandro Garnacho, and Joshua Zirkzee returning last week. Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez, and Facundo Pellistri rejoined this week. United will be without the injured Leny Yoro (foot) for three months and Rasmus Hojlund (hamstring) for a month. Jonny Evans (illness) and Victor Lindelof are doubts, while center back Harry Maguire has suffered a setback, continuing United’s injury woes in defense. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also struggling to be fit, but Ten Hag revealed that Lisandro Martinez might return. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount, and Amad Diallo have all been heavily involved in preseason in the four attacking positions.

Manchester City vs Manchester United prediction

This match could be unusual as both teams aim to get their star players on the field for their first preseason minutes, but it will look quite different from the FA Cup final at the end of last season. City might have the advantage with Grealish and Haaland in form, and United’s ongoing center back issues could make them vulnerable defensively.”
