ARSENAL
CONTRACT SIGNED: Arsenal set to announce their fourth summer signing tomorrow after board agreed to pay the release clause today. Deal to be completed tomorrow morning.

Arsenal are optimistic about finalizing a deal with Real Sociedad for their key midfielder, Mikel Merino. According to a report from Football Insider, Arsenal is confident in securing Merino’s services as they aim to strengthen their midfield. The Gunners have been negotiating with the Spanish club to bring the talented midfielder to the Emirates.
Merino, who joined Sociedad in 2018 after a brief spell with Newcastle, is set for a return to the Premier League. While his previous experience in England was not successful, his recent performances suggest he’s ready for another opportunity. Last season, Merino was impressive, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 45 appearances. He also played a key role in Spain’s victory at Euro 2024.
With less than a year remaining on his contract, Merino seems ready to leave Sociedad. Despite the club’s efforts to keep him with a lucrative new offer, the player appears determined to depart and is expected to do so before the transfer window closes.
Arsenal’s optimism about signing Merino has grown, even amidst concerns that Sociedad might block the move due to Martin Zubimendi’s possible transfer to Liverpool. However, those concerns have eased, and Sociedad is likely to lose both of their standout players from last season.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is seeking a new number six, especially with doubts about Thomas Partey’s availability and Jorginho’s suitability for a deeper role. While Merino is naturally a central midfielder, he has the versatility to form a strong double pivot with Declan Rice, which would improve Arsenal’s midfield options.
The Gunners have already had discussions with Merino, who has expressed his willingness to join the club. Negotiations between Arsenal and Sociedad are ongoing as they work towards a full agreement for the transfer. Arsenal is confident that the deal will be completed soon, with Merino also eager to make the move.
