Palmer’s impact despite an injury-hit season

Cole Palmer has faced a difficult and interrupted 2025–26 campaign, with repeated fitness issues significantly limiting his availability. The creative midfielder has made just 13 appearances in all competitions so far, yet he has still managed to score five goals during those limited spells on the pitch.

When fully fit, the 23-year-old remains central to Chelsea’s tactical approach, which explains why the club’s medical and coaching staff are taking no chances with his condition. That cautious approach was evident in the decision to leave Palmer out of the European fixture against Cypriot side Pafos.

Reason behind Palmer’s absence vs Pafos and latest on Reece James

Ahead of the Pafos match, Rosenior revealed in his press conference that Palmer had felt “a slight tightness in his thigh.” The Chelsea head coach stressed that the decision to rest him was purely preventative and suggested there is optimism Palmer will be available when the Blues face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

“It was purely precautionary,” Rosenior said. “He felt something very small in the Brentford game, and it happened early, so full credit to him for getting through the match. At this point, I don’t want to take risks — especially with a player of his quality. There’s a strong chance he’ll be involved and even start on Sunday, and we’ll continue preparing him for that.”

While concerns over Palmer have eased, new questions have arisen regarding captain Reece James and reserve goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, both of whom were unable to complete the full match against Pafos.

The pair were substituted at halftime, forcing Rosenior into changes. Robert Sanchez replaced Jorgensen in goal, while highly rated Brazilian youngster Estevao was also introduced. Despite the disruption, Chelsea secured a narrow 1–0 win, with Moises Caicedo scoring the decisive goal in the 78th minute.

Addressing Jorgensen’s issue — with the extent of the injury still unclear — Rosenior admitted his frustration: “Sadly, Filip picked up something. I’m really gutted for him because he’s been excellent, not just in the Charlton match but also in training. Hopefully, he can recover quickly.”

Rosenior also provided an update on James, playing down the severity of the captain’s situation: “With our schedule being Wednesday–Saturday every week, we need to manage Reece carefully. He’s an exceptional player and a leader within the squad, so it’s important we keep him available as much as possible.”
