Liverpool could reignite the career of Jadon Sancho on a free transfer this summer — six years after Jurgen Klopp openly declared that the then-highly rated winger would suit the Anfield club perfectly.
The 26-year-old England international is set to depart Manchester United when his contract expires on June 30, bringing an end to a disappointing five-year spell at Old Trafford. Despite the option to extend his deal by an additional year, the United hierarchy decided to part ways with the player, who has not featured for the club since August 2024.
Sancho’s career trajectory could have taken a dramatically different path had Klopp’s interest materialised back in 2020. During his final full season at Borussia Dortmund, the forward was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, with reports suggesting he even favoured a switch to Liverpool. In comments to German newspaper Bild, Klopp was effusive: “The red shirt [of Liverpool] would suit very well. I don’t think such a transfer will be possible this season. He [Sancho] is a very interesting player. If he’s coming to Liverpool I would be the most surprised of all of us.”
Just a year later, Sancho joined Manchester United in a £73million deal, arriving alongside the returning Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane. What followed was a frustrating period marked by inconsistent performances, limited starts, and a gradual decline in his standing at the club.
Now a free agent, Sancho represents a low-risk opportunity for interested parties. However, his stalled development in recent years has significantly diminished the initial excitement that once surrounded him. While a move to Liverpool would carry undeniable romantic symmetry given Klopp’s earlier endorsement, it remains unlikely. The winger’s profile may not fully align with the high-tempo demands of the current Anfield setup under manager Andoni Iraola.
Nevertheless, Liverpool are in clear need of attacking reinforcements heading into the new season. Mohamed Salah is exiting the club, Hugo Ekitike is expected to miss the first half of the campaign through injury, and the long-term future of Federico Chiesa remains uncertain. A revamp of the forward line appears inevitable.
Replacing a player of Salah’s calibre is widely regarded as an almost impossible task. That said, Liverpool are reportedly leading the race for RB Leipzig’s teenage sensation Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old Ivorian winger, valued at around £87million by his club, impressed on international duty on Monday, helping the Ivory Coast secure a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening 2026 World Cup match.
Whether Liverpool opt for a speculative gamble on a proven but out-of-favour talent like Sancho or pursue younger, high-potential targets like Diomande, the summer transfer window promises to be pivotal for the Merseyside club.
