Tottenham Step Up Defensive Rebuild Under Roberto De Zerbi
Tottenham Hotspur have wasted no time reshaping their defence this summer, making several key additions as new head coach Roberto De Zerbi looks to address the club’s defensive struggles from last season.
After conceding goals too frequently in the Premier League, strengthening the back line became a top priority. Spurs have already secured experienced left-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool, while Marcos Senesi has also arrived after leaving Bournemouth.
The club’s defensive rebuild may not be over. Reports continue to link Tottenham with a move for Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, with a deal worth around £52 million being discussed. If completed, the Dutch international would become one of the most expensive defenders in the club’s history.
With Cristian Romero widely expected to leave this summer, De Zerbi could have several tactical options at his disposal. Van Hecke and Senesi could partner in central defence, while Micky van de Ven may also be used at left-back or as part of a back three, depending on the opposition.
Robertson’s arrival adds valuable experience, although his minutes are likely to be managed throughout the season. His leadership and defensive quality could prove especially important in high-profile fixtures, while younger full-backs such as Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence may feature more regularly in matches requiring greater pace and attacking intent.
De Zerbi is also expected to implement a more possession-based style, making ball-playing defenders like Senesi and Van Hecke ideal fits for his system. Van de Ven’s pace will remain a crucial weapon, particularly when defending high up the pitch.
Competition for places extends to goalkeeping, with Guglielmo Vicario looking to regain top form after an inconsistent campaign, while Antonín Kinský has emerged as a strong contender following an impressive finish to last season.
With added depth from players including Kevin Danso, Radu Drăgușin and several promising youngsters, Tottenham now possess far greater defensive competition than in previous years.
As the transfer window continues, Spurs are expected to remain active, but one thing is already clear: strengthening the defence has become the foundation of Roberto De Zerbi’s project ahead of the new season.
